The Martin dreadnought which was first conceived in 1916 by Martin under the Oliver Ditson brandname, and these early dreadoughts were already impressive both in sound and in looks boasting a big body with a 12-fret neck and slotted headstock. This gorgeous D-28S is an homage to those early Martin-build guitars. Although quite different from their more "modern" relatives, these guitars very much deserve a place in the Martin guitar line-up with a unique tonal character and fantastic playability. Only 251 of this model were made in 1971, compared to nearly 5,500 14-fret D-28's, so when we say "comparatively rare", it's not an exaggeration! This is a lovely looking, great-playing guitar with a very powerful voice.

It goes without saying that this guitar handles strumming with ease, but thanks to the 48mm (1 7/8") nutwidth and 60mm (2 3/8") stringspacing it will almost certainly appeal to most fingerstyle players offering a great alternative for your "standard" fingerstyle models. It features typical 28-style specs like Indian Rosewood back and sides, Spruce top, firm mahogany neck, ebony fretboard with pearl dot inlays and ebony bridge.

This 1971-built guitar is in great condition for it's age, with a few long-ago repaired top cracks and evidence of a previous neck reset and refret., and the nut and saddle have been replaced at some point. All that said, this is a fantastic sounding dreadnought - there's more overtones and a more muscular tone than a standard D-28 of this era, and a huge dynamic range. It's loud and clear, with classic Martin low end power, and sounds enormous whether strummed or fingerpicked. A very rare and very cool vintage Martin dreadnought! Includes original hardshell case.
