The Maton Master Built Series represents the pinnacle of craftsmanship, with a focus on creating instruments that are truly one-of-a-kind. After the retirement of head of Custom Shop Andy Allen in 2023, Maton’s Head of R&D Patrick Evans, along with a team of highly skilled luthiers, has worked tirelessly to bring this next-level collection to life. The Master Built guitars are hand-crafted using only the finest tonewoods, and each instrument is individually voiced for its unique tonal properties, making every guitar in the series a true work of art. Limited to only two dealers in Australia, the Maton Master Built Series stands as a testament to Maton’s ongoing legacy of creating premium, world-class instruments.

The Master Built series builds on the success of Maton’s Custom Shop, with a scientific approach to guitar design that combines acoustic mapping technology and rigorous material testing. Patrick Evans, Head of R&D, emphasizes that the goal is to consistently produce guitars that reflect the craftsmanship of past models while pushing the boundaries to rival the best in the world. This process includes careful selection and treatment of each component, from soundboard to bracing, ensuring that the materials enhance the guitar’s tonal character. The guitars are designed to be lightweight, using resonant woods and "A"-shaped bracing to optimize response and sound quality.

Inspired by the timeless W.A. May model, the brand new L.E. May features a sleek design with a traditional cutaway body and a smaller headstock, modeled after Maton’s original 1940s headstock. The headstock is meticulously crafted from Ebony and bound with Yellow Wood Ash, while the art déco-inspired pearl inlay adds a touch of elegance. The figured Queensland Maple neck and Ebony fretboard ensure smooth playability, while the overall design reflects Maton’s rich heritage of building world-class instruments.

The L.E. May is constructed from premium tonewoods, with a carefully selected European Spruce soundboard that offers a bright and dynamic tone. The back and sides are made from figured Victorian Blackwood, providing a balanced, resonant sound that is rich in warmth and clarity. The body is beautifully bound with Satin Box outer binding and BWB inner binding, while the timber soundhole rosette adds a natural touch to the aesthetic. The guitar is finished with a gloss natural finish, which highlights the stunning figure of the body and neck. The AP5 PRO pickup system ensures this guitar is ready for the stage, offering a full, clear sound whether played acoustically or plugged in.
